NSW: Privately held rights would hinder conservation - NCC

New South Wales' peak environment group says the push by farmers for privately-heldrights over resources such as land and water, is endangering debate about the consequences.

The NSW Nature Conservation Council says it's concerned about the potential impacton the environment.

NCC executive officer KATHY RIDGE says privately-held rights over natural resourceswould erode the community's ability to manage those resources in the public interest.

Ms RIDGE says the Council of Australian Governments and the states have been pressuredto deliver a system of property rights, and that's endangering proper debate on the fall-out.

The issue of property rights over natural resources will be examined by the two-dayFuturescape 2002 conference that starts today in Sydney.
